AI & Personal Wellbeing:
A qualitative study

Understanding the use of generative AI for personal wellbeing

Note: This study has been reviewed by an independent research ethics committee and approved.

About this Study

This research investigates how people use generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) to support their mental wellbeing and their views about therapy, counselling or other professional mental health support.

Why is this study important?

Gen AI tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly being used for personal wellbeing support, but there is still a lot we do not know about how people experience and use them. This study explores people's experiences and opinions of using GenAI for personal wellbeing reasons such as understanding their interpersonal communication,  their mental and physical health, their relationships, etc. Since GenAI is an emerging technology, these topics are currently grossly under-researched, even more so in non-WEIRD cultural contexts (i.e. non-Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich and Democratic countries). Your participation will help fill this scholarly gap.

Please participate if:

  1. You are between 18 and 34 years old.

  2. You have previously used ChatGPT or another AI chatbot for a mental health or emotional wellbeing-related reason.

Note: Please do not participate if you are currently experiencing a severe mental health crisis. This is because the study is not designed to provide clinical assessment, treatment, or crisis support.

Who is conducting the study?

This study is being undertaken by Saloni Lad a research trainee at the Department of Psychology at Nolmë Labs.
